Newcastle are interested in signing Bordeaux striker Diego Rolan, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim that the Magpies are eyeing the 24-year-old and that he is available for just £5million from the French club.
It is understood that Championship side Fulham have bid for the forward, but that he would prefer a move to the Premier League in the summer.
The Uruguay international has been impressing in the French League with Bordeaux since 2013 and become an important player for them.
Rolan made 33 appearances last season across all competitions and managed 10 goals in return.
The versatile attacker usually plays in a central role, but can also been deployed out wide.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez is currently assessing his options ahead of the club’s Premier League return and has recently let forward Adam Armstrong join Bolton on loan.
Football Insider verdict:
Newcastle should certainly rival Fulham for Rolan’s signature and would be able to blow them out of the water with the offer of Premier League football. The 24-year-old could turn out to be a bargain price at just £5million and deserves a shot in English football. He has scored 10 or more goals for Bordeaux in the past three consecutive seasons and there is no reason why he couldn’t replicate that form in England. Newcastle could do with some extra competition in attack to really put pressure on Dwight Gayle for a starting position, while Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez and Daryl Murphy remain alternative options in the squad.
In other Newcastle transfer news, they have agreed a £12.5million fee for a 22-year-old attacker.
