Newcastle United fans have taken to social media to fume over controversial comments made by senior striker Aleksandar Mitrovic while on loan at Championship side Fulham.

The Serbian striker headed down to Craven Cottage on the final day of the January transfer window after struggling to impose himself on Rafael Benitez’s squad at St James’ Park, and the move has seemingly brought the best out of the 23-year-old.

Returning to England’s second tier, where he managed to score just four goals in 25 appearances for Newcastle on the way to the title during the 2016/17 season, Mitrovic hit the ground running with the Cottagers, scoring 12 goals in 19 appearances, as he helped his loan side to reach the play off finals, where they will meet Aston Villa for a place in the top flight.

However the striker, who is known for his lack of self control on the football pitch, appears to have allowed his heart to rule over his head once again, issuing a controversial statement which has been taken badly by the Newcastle faithful.

As quoted by Twitter account Fulham Focus, Mitrovic said after their 2-0 win over Derby County: “I don’t think I’ve played in front of better fans than tonight.”

The Toon Army have been quick to pounce on his comments, laughing at suggestions that Fulham fans are better than they are, while lashing out at Mitrovic and suggesting he is joking.
