Newcastle United fans were left raging on social media with the performance of Mikel Merino in the club’s clash against Leicester City on Saturday.
The Magpies came into the clash having picked up just one point from their last matches, but made the brighter start at St James’ Park, Joselu scoring his first goal in eight games after just four minutes to give the home side the lead.
However Leicester fought back to equalise and then take the lead, with Riyad Mahrez and Demerai Gray putting the ball past Karl Darlow in the Newcastle net.
Dwight Gayle seemed to have rescued a point for Rafael Benitez and his men with a drilled effort from inside the box, but an Ayoze Perez own goal meant that Leicester were the ones leaving St James’ Park with all three points.
The Toon Army were left fuming with the performance of firm fans’ favourite Mikel Merino after the 21-year-old’s showing, with his sloppy pass contributing to Leicester’s opener, and fans turned to Twitter to voice their discontent.
Here, Football Insider has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ best tweets:
Merino and Hayden at nothing here I'd swap them both for Diame and Shelvey can't be any worse

Merino is absolutely pony! Gives the ball away and is always out of position!

@NUFC @ChronicleNUFC We are going down make no mistake. Absolute unadulterated rubbish.Ritchie, Clark, Hayden , Lejeune, Merino couldn’t pass to save their lives. Shelvey sitting on the bench. Darlow rooted to the ground for first goal. Miracle needed !!

If Merino starts ahead of Shelvey midweek it will be a disgrace. Merino has been poor since his injury. Did he make one forward pass today? Shelvey confident, takes control, looks forward and makes things happen. Needs to start every match. #nufc

Since arriving at St James’ Club on an initial year-long loan from Borussia Dortmund, which was turned into a permanent five-year contract, Merino has made 13 appearances for the club, scoring his first goal in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, the club’s last victory.
