Newcastle United fans have been left in meltdown on social media after watching the performance of midfield maestro Jonjo Shelvey during the club’s clash against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Magpies welcomed the Blues to St James’ Park looking to nail down a top 10 finish with all three points, while Antonio Conte’s side needed the win to have any chance of securing a top 10 finish, sitting behind Liverpool in fifth going into the final game of the season.

However it was the home side who drew first blood, Dwight Gayle heading home his sixth goal of the season after Thibaut Courtois had stopped an effort from winger Jacob Murphy, who was making a rare start in place of the ineligible Kenedy.

The Magpies made it 2-0 in the second half, Ayoze Perez flicking on Shelvey’s strike, and despite the impressive performances of the attacking stars, it was the man in the centre who picked up the plaudits on Twitter, his passing range and control of the game heralded by the Newcastle faithful – even if he did miss a good opportunity to score in the first half.

Here, Football Insider has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ best tweets:

After a controversial start to the season, which saw him sent off for a stamp on Dele Alli, Shelvey has gone on to make 32 appearances across all competitions this season.

In other Newcastle United news, the club have been handed a massive boost over keeping Rafael Benitez after a massive £16million revelation.
