Newcastle fans react to speculation club have made shock raid for PL sensation

By Harry Sykes

Newcastle United have reportedly made a surprise move for in-demand Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford – and fans have taken to Twitter to express their scepticism.

The Sun claim that Newcastle are aiming to jump ahead of cash-rich Everton in the queue to prise the 23-year-old from Wearside.

It is said that Newcastle have now made a “shock raid” and are strongly in contention as they prepare to offer Pickford a long-term contract worth £75,000-a-week.

The report comes after Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed with their defeat at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Pickford is widely regarded as one of the Black Cats’ prize assets following a campaign in which he has arguably been their outstanding player.

But few Newcastle fans on social media believe their club have much of a chance of signing the Englishman due to the fact he he is product of the Sunderland academy and is a talisman of the team of their bitter rivals.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Newcastle also have four senior goalkeepers on their payroll, including Karl Darlow, Rob Elliot, Matz Sels and Tim Krul, who has spent the season on loan at Ajax.

Former Nottingham Forest ace Darlow has been the number one for the majority of their Championship campaign but has been dropped for the last two matches in favour of fit-again Elliot.

Newcastle secured instant promotion to the Premier League on Monday night with a 4-1 win against Preston on what was a memorable evening.

Sunderland are heading in the opposition but there appears little chance of Pickford playing in the Championship next season after emerging as a bona fide Premier League sensation.

In other Newcastle United transfer news, a brilliant text about Moussa Sissoko has been circulated among the club’s staff after Wednesday’s HMRC raid.
