Newcastle are reportedly on the verge of completing their fifth signing of the summer with the arrival of midfielder Mikel Merino – and fans on Twitter are clearly excited by the news.
The Daily Mail’s north-east correspondent Craig Hope claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon that the 20-year-old enforcer is on Tyneside undergoing a medical ahead of a permanent transfer from Borussia Dortmund.
Spain Under-21 international Merino now looks to be joining Christian Atsu, Florian Lejeune, Javier Manquillo and Jacob Murphy in signing for the Magpies this summer.
Merino only moved to Borussia Dortmund from Osasuna last season, but found it hard to break into the senior squad as he was reduced to just nine appearances across all competitions, with only two of them being starts.
However it now looks like Newcastle are set to bag the Spanish wonderkid, who can play in the centre of midfield or in the heart of defence.
The Toon Army appear to be delighted with the prospect of signing up a young, up-and-coming talent from one of Europe’s most illustrious clubs – with one fan joking that he could be the “next Xabi Alonso”.
Here is a selection of their tweets:
Hopefully this Merino will be a good player but we still need a left back, attacking midfield and a striker as a min!! #NUFC

So is this Merino one for the future? Glad to see a signing but we definitely need some PL experience in that squad #NUFC

Wouldn't panic about the budget due to the Merino deal, could just be using other money this window on other targets #nufc

Borussia Dortmund confirmed on Wednesday that the versatile Merino had failed to travel with the squad in a pre-season trip to Switzerland and was in talks with another team, which now appears to be Newcastle.
In other Newcastle news, a reunion is on the cards as this defender looks to secure a transfer.
