Newcastle fans directed a surprising chant at referee Stuart Attwell after a disallowed goal in their match against Bournemouth, to the shock of Darren Fletcher.

The Magpies were trailing 2-1 (18 January) to the Cherries in the 61st minute, and it looked like Bournemouth had extended their lead through Dango Outtara.

However, VAR intervened on behalf of the home side and disallowed the goal for the ball going out of play, giving Newcastle a lifeline in the tie.

Ten minutes after the fact, a chant was directed at the referee that caught commentator Fletcher off guard on TNT Sports (1.56pm). He said: “We’ve just had a chorus on the Gallowgate (end) of you’re not fit to referee.

"Aimed at a man who’s just disallowed a goal for the opposition…there you go, who’d be a ref eh!”

Newcastle finally lose after winning run

Football Insider Verdict

The Magpies had been on a fine run, after a slow start to the season, and had been on a run of nine wins in nine games, in all competitions.

However, against Bournemouth, that winning run came to an abrupt end as they were beaten 4-1 at home.

Andoni Iraola's side were aggressive from the opening whistle and took the lead through Justin Kluivert in just the sixth minute.

Bruno Guimaraes equalised for the Magpies, but two more goals from Kluivert and a late strike from Liverpool transfer-target Milos Kerkez sealed the victory for the South Coast side.

Newcastle's wonderful winning run might have come to an end, but the Magpies will be hoping that this was a one-off result that won't jeopardise their attempts to qualify for Champions League football.

The match also marked the end of Arsenal transfer-target Alexander Isak's run of scoring in consecutive games, as he fell short of Jamie Vardy's record by three matches.

The next opponents for Newcastle will Southampton, when they make the long journey down to the South of England to take on their troubled opponents on 25 January.
