Newcastle fire sale continues: Another attacker expected to leave by Sunday - report

By Danny Wright

Newcastle attacker Siem De Jong is expected to join Dutch giants Ajax over the course of the weekend, according to a report.

The Newcastle Chronicle claims that De Jong, 28, is likely to complete his return to the Amsterdam club by the end of Sunday after Emmanuel Riviere’s switch to FC Metz was confirmed on Friday.

Attackers Daryl Murphy and Sammy Ameobi have also been moved on by Rafa Benitez this summer while Newcastle’s fire sale shows no sign of slowing down with De Jong now poised to leave.

The six-times Netherlands international signed for the Magpies from Ajax in 2014, but since then he has only featured 26 times across all competitions after suffering with various injury problems.

He was shipped out on loan to PSV last season when he scored seven goals in 25 appearances in all contests, with one of his strikes coming against his soon-to-be employers Ajax in a 1-1 draw last December.

In what has been a very busy summer on Tyneside, Newcastle have shown nine players the door for good, while a further three have been sent out on loan.

Florian Thauvin, Vurnon Anita, Yoann Gouffran and Haris Vukic are among the names of players that have left St. James’ Park this season with De Jong now looking to join that last in the next few days.

Football Insider Verdict

Even though a lot of players have been shown the door by Benitez and co this summer, it still hasn’t been the most promising transfer window for Newcastle. Florian Lejeune and Jacob Murphy appear to be the only signings that have improved the squad to any extent while Mikel Merino is perhaps the most promising player to come, albeit on loan. Benitez has to get rid of the deadwood that still plagues the Magpies squad and put together all the funds possible make a considerable addition to his squad. There will be increased calls for Mike Ashley to get out of the club unless that happens.

In other Newcastle news, the Magpies have rejected multiple bids for this player who was crucial to the first-team during their promotion drive last season.
