Newcastle lambasted over 'stupid' and 'embarrassing' new controversy - pundit

Newcastle United are “embarrassing” and “stupid” as they look set to wear a green and white away shirt next season.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the club’s “Saudi inspired” away kit.

The Daily Mail (13 May) have verified the leaked photos of Newcastle’s kit are real and claim the strip is “likely to attract criticism”.

Newcastle are 80% owned by the Saudi Public Investment fund following October’s takeover.

There has been criticism of the decision to let the takeover go through amid allegations of sports washing by the gulf state.

McAvennie insists this is a controversy Newcastle could do without.

“The club will come out and say they had nothing to do with it but someone must have signed off on it,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Do they need that? It’s stupid, isn’t it? I guess they will sell a few of them in Saudi Arabia.

“It’s Saudi inspired, is it? Oh dear me, that’s embarrassing. In today’s climate, you really don’t need that. Just focus on yourselves

“I can’t see the owners wanting to do that, I wonder if the manufacturer has done it.

“Surely the owners just want to stay in the background? I really don’t get this one to be honest.”

Newcastle will play Premier League football next season following Leeds’ 3-0 loss to Chelsea on Wednesday (11 May).

The club were rock bottom of the table when Eddie Howe took over in November.
