Newcastle are set to pursue not one but two Premier League strikers this summer if they are promoted from the Championship, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim that Rafa Benitez is hungry to add two goalscorers to his ranks with top flight experience as they prepare for a return to England’s elite competition.
Adding two experienced goalscorers to the squad would be a massive statement of intent from Newcastle and Benitez, who will be prepared to throw everything they have at their bid for survival next term.
Newcastle are keeping tabs on three talented goalscorers, with Burnley’s Andre Gray, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson and Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge top of their target list.
The Chronicle revelation suggests a deal could be plausible to land at least two.
Dwight Gayle has been the most prolific goalscorer within the ranks at St. James’ Park this term with 21 goals, but he has had little support from backup duo Aleksandar Mitrovic and Daryl Murphy.
However, Newcastle’s reported desire to add two more goalscorers suggests that the residency for the pair at the club could be nearing its end.
Mitrovic has already been tipped for a summer exit after failing to convince the Newcastle faithful since his £13million move in 2015, while Murphy could be sacrificed given his lack of Premier League experience.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Riviere is also likely to shipped out, once his loan spell at Osasuna is completed.
If Benitez is given the necessary backing of the board in the summer transfer window, there possibilities to strengthen the clubs goalscoring ranks will be endless.
Alongside Sturridge and Gray, the likes of Michy Batshuayi have also been linked with moves to Newcastle, and Benitez will likely seek out the deal that best represents value for money.
Football Insider verdict
Had Newcastle been hoping to fight for survival in the Premier League with their current trio of strikers, they would have been making a big mistake. Fortunately, the club realises the need to address their goalscoring situation by adding two strikers with Premier League experience. Even Gayle, who has performed superbly in the Championship, can not be considered a prolific goalscorer at Premier League level, and Newcastle will need to bring in players who have a proven track record. Sturridge is sure to be the striker most readily available, but Gray and Wilson remain strong possibilities depending on where their respective sides finish in the table this season.
In other Newcastle transfer news, these three France stars could possibly have been on the agenda in reported scouting mission against Luxembourg.
