Newcastle lead 10-club chase to sign Premier League sensation - report

By Harry Sykes

Newcastle lead the chase to sign Chelsea sensation Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan in the January transfer window, according to a report.

The Mail claim that the Championship big hitters are at the “fore” of the race to land the England Under-21 international next month.

It is said that 10 clubs have made enquiries to sign the 20-year-old Stamford Bridge academy product for the second half of the season.

The Mail report that Chelsea want Loftus-Cheek to go on loan in order to play regular first-team football and aid his development.

The creative midfielder has found himself on the fringes under Antonio Conte this season and has made just three appearances for the first team, amounting to just nine minutes of Premier League action.

But Loftus-Cheek is a 15-times England Under-21 international and regarded as one of the outstanding young players in the country.

Conte has stuck with virtually the same side during Chelsea’s remarkable run of 12 consecutive league wins that has catapulted the team to the Premier League summit with 46 points from 18 matches.

They are six points ahead of second-placed Liverpool ahead of their next match against Stoke at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Newcastle lost against Sheffield Wednesday on Monday to slip to second in the Championship behind new leaders Brighton.

Football Insider verdict:

In a manner not entirely unfamiliar for stars emerging from the Chelsea academy, Lotfus-Cheek’s career has stalled this season just when it appeared to be on the verge of lift-off. He is a rising star and potentially a top-class Premier League player but his chances of breaking into the high flying Chelsea team any time soon are remote. With a settled winning team, no European commitments and an early exit from the League Cup, opportunities have been thin on the ground for the Stamford Bridge academy product this season. At this crucial time in his career, Loftus Cheek needs regular top-level football week in, week out. Playing regularly for the Championship’s best side and working under Benitez is exactly what he needs. It would undoubtedly be a huge coup if Newcastle can land Loftus-Cheek for the second half of the campaign.

In the latest Newcastle transfer news, the club are to sanction a January striker deal.
