Report: Newcastle eye January swoop for PL forward - Benitez desire dependent on departure
By Russell Edge
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is looking to bring in Liverpool’s Danny Ings on loan as he targets two strikers during the January transfer window, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim on their website that the 25-year-old England forward is set to be the Magpies’ prime target in the winter transfer window as the Spanish manager looks to improve his attacking options.
He currently has summer arrival Joselu, last season’s top scorer Dwight Gayle and fans’ favourite Aleksandar Mitrovic at his disposal, although the report states securing a second striker after Ings could be dependent on securing the departure of the Serbian.
The Liverpool man has endured a nightmare two years with the Reds since arriving from Burnley, as injuries have limited him to just 12 appearances across all competitions, with just one League Cup outing to his name this season.

While it is no secret Rafa Benitez’s top target must be a striker in January, the Chronicle’s report gives fans an idea of what to expect in the winter market. He was vocal about securing proven top flight talent in the summer but Joselu, who arrived from Stoke, has failed to provide the goals necessary to secure wins, or even draws, this season. There must be doubts over whether Ings is the right man to provide what the Magpies need considering his injury record but if he can replicate his form prior to his move to Anfield, then it could be a stroke of genius. As for Mitrovic’s apparent impending departure it appears as though the boss has lost patience, and if funds raised from his sale are invested wisely, then it should be no real loss for the squad.
