Newcastle line up move for international defender set to be shipped out by PL side - report

By Russell Edge

Newcastle are one of a host of clubs who are eyeing up a move for Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson this summer, according to a report.

ESPN FC claim on their website that the Gunners are preparing to offload the versatile 25-year-old, who can operate anywhere along the back four, and that a quartet of top flight sides are considering swooping for his signing.

They report that Newcastle are joined by Swansea, Burnley and fellow promoted side Brighton in eyeing a move for his signature, which would end a six year spell at the Emirates Stadium for the player.

He joined the North London side from Charlton back in 2011, but has gone on to make just 62 appearances for the club, while he has also spent time on loan.

His last spell in the first team came during a temporary stint at West Ham, where he made 23 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice.

However, a torn knee ligament suffered in January ended his season, and he had to wait until October before he made another senior appearance, this time in the League Cup for Arsenal.

However, the one-time-capped England international made just five first team appearances last season, and it appears his time in North London has come to an end.

Football insider verdict

While taking on a proven Premier League performer seems like a no brainer for Newcastle ahead of their top flight return, there are more risks than meet the eye. There will be doubts over the serious injury he suffered last year, with the 25-year-old not having been provided enough game time to prove that he is back to his best. Questions will also be asked about whether he has done enough to be considered Premier League quality, and some will ask whether his versatility is a down side, having never nailed down a recognised starting position. Still, for Newcastle, they could do a lot worse, and if he is available for a cut price this summer, he could prove to be at worst an effective squad player.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the club are said to be in pole position for this international full-back.
