Newcastle eye swoop for rivals' international attacker with bargain price tag - report
Newcastle United are eyeing up a January transfer swoop for Everton winger Aaron Lennon this month as he enters the last six months of his contract, according to a report.
ESPN FC claim on their website that the Magpies are lining up a move for the 30-year-old forward, with Theo Walcott’s from Arsenal, as well as Yannick Bolasie’s return to fitness after his long term injury, threatening to reduce his playing time at Goodison Park.
The 21-cap international attacker has managed to make 19 appearances this season, with nine of those coming among the starting XI in the Premier League.
He has 342 top flight outings to his name, but with his contract situation it is said that there is set to be a bargain price tag slapped on his head and that several of Everton’s rivals, Newcastle included, are monitoring the situation.
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez might have a threadbare squad at his disposal, but the wide positions are where he actually has a handful of options to choose from. The arrival of Lennon, who would be seeking more regular playing time, would threaten Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu’s places in the starting XI, while fringe figures Rolando Aarons and Jacob Murphy, who have both featured this season, would fall further down the pecking order. The cut-price fee certainly suits the Magpies, while Everton have to decide whether to cash in now or see him depart for free in six months, if he chooses not to renew terms on Merseyside.
