Newcastle have made an enquiry for Middlesbrough winger Adama Traore, according to a report.
The Daily Mail have claimed in their transfer column on Thursday that the Magpies have looked towards their north east rivals and have made their interest known in the 21-year-old right-winger.
West Ham are also said to have made an enquiry, while Traore is also said to be drawing interest from Premier League champions Chelsea, who made moves themselves in January.
It is however detailed that Middlesbrough do not want to sell the tricky winger, but it is also stated that Traore himself is “keen to speak to Premier League clubs.”
The former Spain Under-19 international only made the switch to the north east last summer from then relegated club Aston Villa.
But, he was then unable to keep Boro in the top-flight with a return of just one assist from 21 league appearances.
Traore is still contracted to Middlesbrough until 2020, but manager Rafa Benitez may believe that he can finally get the best from his fellow Spaniard, who was once thought of highly in the Barcelona youth ranks.
Football Insider verdict:
A bad player does not make four first team appearances for Barcelona, while even scoring a goal. However, for whatever reason Traore’s development has stalled and that may be down to the fact he has made two poor decisions in joining two struggling Premier League clubs, or that he is just not suited to Premier League football. However, Benitez will see the talent within Traore and he will believe that he can finally get the best out of him, which could see Newcastle gain a very valuable asset. Therefore, this is exactly the type of transfer Newcastle should be trying to make this summer as they look to build for the future.
