Report: Newcastle line up Everton first team trio, one offer in and two approaches made

By Harry Sykes

Newcastle have made approaches to sign three senior Everton players this month, according to a report.

The Chronicle claim the Championship promotion challengers have tabled a six-month loan offer for England international Tom Cleverley.

They have also made approaches for his Goodison Park teammates James McCarthy and Gerard Deulofeu.

Manager Rafael Benitez is keen to strengthen a Newcastle squad that has lost two of its last three matches in a blow to their automatic promotion bid.

It is reported that Newcastle want to sign an attack-minded central midfielder and a winger during the January window and are casting their net wide to fill the positions.

In addition to the offer for Cleverley, the Magpies have submitted offers to take Manchester City’s Fabian Delph and Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan for the rest of the season.

Newcastle are waiting to hear back on the Premier League trio, with Everton likely to wait to complete the signing of Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United before allowing Cleverley to leave.

However, Benitez’s side have been frustrated in their attempts to land Cleverley’s fellow first-teamers, central midfielder McCarthy and right-winger Deulofeu.

Newcastle’s advances for McCarthy, who has returned to the team recently, were rebuffed, while they have abandoned their pursuit of Deulofeu after Everton made it clear that a deal was not possible.
