Newcastle United will be looking for a whole host of new recruits over the summer but with a limited transfer budget, they might have to looking in unconventional places.
Poaching a senior star from a Premier League rival might well be too expensive for the Magpies with Mike Ashley keeping a tight fist on the transfer budget, and so overseas talents will likely be their targets.
However, while taking the risk on foreign signings could help or hinder the squad, they will need some proven performers in the Premier League to improve on their impressive 10th placed finish.
If not taking on stars from their top flight counterparts, then they may be tempted to look down at the Championship, as they did last summer with the swoop of Jacob Murphy, and there are a handful of talents who could improve the senior side at St James’ Park.
One of those is Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, and the 22-year-old may be seeking an exit from Villa Park after suffering the heartbreak of a play-off final defeat to Fulham, despite his personal dazzling display.
He was Newcastle’s hero in the 2016/17 campaign, scoring the goal against Brighton on the final day of the season which secured the Magpies the Championship title, and the Toon Army would likely welcome a player of his creativity and ilk to Tyneside.
Jonjo Shelvey is the Newcastle midfielder with the most vision but Grealish would bring in another element to the attack with his brilliant close control, and help provide the front line with more goal scoring opportunities.
He is likely to be pursued by a number of clubs after Villa’s failure to secure promotion, so Newcastle must launch an immediate bid to snatch him up ahead of their rivals.
In other Newcastle United news, there are key talks imminent after the club’s top brass held a meeting over the future.
