Newcastle offered chance to sign proven PL striker - report

By Derek Smithson

Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge, according to a report.

The Chronicle claim that the Magpies have been offered the 27-year-old this summer as the club look to bolster their frontline.

The report details that they are confident of securing a deal for Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham and will also have the chance to bring in the experienced Liverpool ace.

Sturridge is renowned as a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and has scored 73 goals in 185 top flight appearances.

The Englishman is currently plying his trade at Anfield, but has also played for Chelsea, Manchester City and Bolton.

He has been plagued by injury throughout his career and managed just 27 goals last season, scoring seven goals and supplying three assists in return.

Sturridge appears to have fallen down the pecking order under Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and doesn’t suit their high pressing style.

Football Insider verdict:

Newcastle certainly need some experienced players arriving at St James’ Park this summer and Rafael Benitez would be making an incredible statement if he signed Sturridge. The striker may have struggled for regular game time last season, but there is no doubting that he is one of the most clinical finishers in the Premier League. He would bring some extra quality to the Magpies side and would give the whole team a lift if he signed. Sturridge doesn’t have the work-rate to match Klopp’s high intensity style, but is deadly in front of goal and possesses great skill too. He may be likely to pick up an injury during the course of the season, but could still comfortably chip in with 15-plus goals.
