Newcastle on verge of two new signings with PIF to spend ‘aggressively’ after Anthony Gordon exit
Anthony Gordon appears set to join Barcelona this summer, and Newcastle United must use that money wisely after a disastrous 2025-26 campaign.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Eddie Howe must splash the cash to avoid missing out on Champions League football again.
Having finished 12th in the Premier League this season, the Magpies have missed out on Champions League football for the second time in four years, delivering a crushing financial blow at St James’ Park.
Given the situation, supporters are worried that Newcastle could lose several big-name stars, but Borson suggests that they should actually be excited about their club’s transfer activity over the summer period.

Despite strong interest from Bayern Munich, Gordon has jetted out to complete a deal with Barcelona, with the Magpies expected to pocket just short of £70million for the England international.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson has backed Newcastle’s transfer chiefs to get business done early, using the money made from their star winger’s transfer to fund multiple deals.
“I think they’ll spend it. I think they’re going to spend anyway. They’ve got to spend. If they don’t spend, then they’ve got no chance next season of getting back in the Champions League places.
| Newcastle’s most expensive departures | Season | Transfer fee |
| Alexander Isak | 2025-26 | £125million |
| Anthony Gordon* | 2025-26 | £69million |
| Elliot Anderson | 2024-25 | £35.8million |
| Andy Carroll | 2010-11 | £35.6million |
| Yankuba Minteh | 2024-25 | £30.4million |
“So they’ll spend. I think they’ll spend quite aggressively, and I think they plan to anyway. But it’s just a case of, can they get hits? Can they scout better?
“I think they’re pretty close already to a couple of signings from what I read. They’re well on top of the situation. So we’ll see. But I would expect them to spend quite big.”
Which other big names could leave St James’ Park?
After missing out on European football altogether, rumours about potential exits are spreading like wildfire ahead of the summer window opening up on 15 June.
Football Insider understands that Arsenal could sign Sandro Tonali for £80million, and in addition to him, Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento have caught the eye during a disappointing campaign.
The good news, however, is that the Magpies are already active in the market, and it may only be a number of weeks before a new set of players begin to arrive at St James’ Park.
Monaco’s Lamine Camara, Man City’s James Trafford and Real Betis’ Abdessamad Ezzalzouli are all heavily linked with a move, and there is likely more to come after that trio.
