Newcastle have made an initial approach for Malaga striker Sandro Ramirez ahead of a possible summer swoop, according to a report.
Spanish media outlet Malaga Hoy claims that manager Rafael Benitez is keen to prise the ex-Barcelona star, 21 from La Liga.
It is said that Newcastle and Tottenham have communicated to Ramirez’s representatives that they are interested in signing him this summer.
It has been previously reported by Spanish media outlet Sport that Tottenham, Southampton and Stoke were also interested in signing Ramirez, who has a £5.1million release clause.
The young striker left Barcelona on a free transfer last summer after making 32 league and cup appearances for the club, scoring seven goals.
Goal machine Ramirez has been in fine form this season, scoring 15 goals in 28 league and cup games for Malaga.
The 21-year-old can play as a striker and on either wing, and has three caps for Spain’s Under-21s.
Football Insider verdict
The £5.1million price tag is perfect for Newcastle, who are likely to be on a much tighter budget than the likes of Tottenham. Ramirez is technically gifted, having spent the majority of his career at the Catalan giants and he has been in good form in front of goal this season. At just 21 he has got a lot to prove and perhaps does not have the experience to come into the side as a first choice striker, but under Benitez he could flourish.
