Newcastle table £10m bid for 22-year-old ace, Benitez eager for quick buy - report

By Danny Wright

Newcastle have tabled a bid worth £10million for Norwich attacker Jacob Murphy, according to a report.

The Newcastle Chronicle claims that the Magpies have “significantly” improved on their original offer for the 22-year-old ace, who featured prominently for Norwich in the Championship last season.

It is understood that manager Rafa Benitez is eager to secure a quick buy and complete a deal for Murphy by Sunday and that managing director Lee Charnley is helping him in securing his third summer signing.

Newcastle have only added Christian Atsu and Florian Lejeune to their ranks so far this summer, after Benitez was expected to completely overhaul his squad as they secured a return to the Premier League last term.

Murphy is an attack-minded winger who usually features on the right flank and made 40 appearances across all competitions for Norwich last season, scoring nine goals and supplying eight assists.

The six-times England Under-21 international is a youth product at Carrow Road and has spent most of his early career out on loan.

However last season saw Murphy finally make a leap into the Norwich first-team after only making three appearances for them beforehand.

Football Insider Verdict

Murphy would definitely be a great addition to Benitez’s side. He would prove to be a great understudy to current wingers Atsu and Matt Ritchie and has a lot of potential that he could reach in the future. It’s good to see that Benitez is willing to spend a good chunk of his transfer budget on young English talent, as he has usually made a habit of raiding continental Europe to bolster his squad in recent years. Even if Newcastle do manage to sign Murphy, they still have a lot of work to do this summer. The Magpies still have a possible relegation battle on their hands and need to get in a new star striker who can score at least 15 goals next season.
