Newcastle tipped to 'break the bank' and sign four stars next week after confession - pundit

Newcastle must pay “ridiculous” fees to sign players during the final week of the January transfer window.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ “desperate” need for fresh faces.

Speaking in his pre-Leeds press conference, Eddie Howe admitted his side’s hunt for new players over the last seven days has been “fruitless”.

The Toon boss hinted that seeling clubs were asking his side for higher fees as he admitted there are “elevated expectations of what Newcastle can pay” since October’s takeover.

Kenny insists the Magpies need to do whatever it takes to get new faces in before the end of the window, even if that means paying well over the odds.

“There is nothing Newcastle can do about it, everyone knows they have money,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“So clubs will demand more money, that’s just how it works. But it’s going to get to the point where they have to pay well over the odds to get these players.

“How they haven’t signed a centre-back is beyond me. Surely that was their first priority?

“It’s a case of biting the bullet. The only way Newcastle will stay up is if the owners break the bank next week and sign three or four players.

“That’s the bare minimum. I think the signings will happen, as they have to”.

Howe’s side have signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood this month but their arrivals have so far failed to inspire a turnaround in the Magpies’ woeful form.

The Magpies have still only won once this season.
