Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Serge Gnabry as a potential replacement for Miguel Almiron this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie explained the Bayern Munich star is worth buying if he will be “better than” what’s already there.

It has been reported that the Magpies are interested in the 29-year-old winger, which could be a move the club pursues this summer.

Gnabry has scored 86 goals in 238 Bayern Munich appearances since joining the German giants in 2018.

The former Arsenal youngster is under contract with the Bundesliga club until 2026, which means Bayern Munich could command a reasonable fee for his services.

Newcastle could complete 'brilliant' Serge Gnabry deal

One reason Gnabry might be someone Newcastle want to sign is because of question marks over Almiron’s future at St James’ Park.

The Paraguay international will need replacing though, considering how vital of a role he’s played in Newcastle’s recent success.

Almiron played 45 times in all competitions last season, so the club would likely only sell him if someone more talented was set to replace him.

“If it’s going to bring somebody in that’s better than [Almiron], and with this fair play and all that kind of nonsense, then it might be the way to do it,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

"I'm a big fan of Gnabry, he's at an amazing club and he is absolutely proven at the highest level. He's a completely different level to Almiron.

"Wow, what a signing he could be. I can see it happening, definitely."

Anthony Gordon is another wide option that Newcastle could lose this summer, which would stretch Eddie Howe’s options even further.
