Newcastle told to complete 'massive coup' after newspaper's Origi-Liverpool update - pundit

Newcastle United must “snap Liverpool’s hand off” if Divock Origi is available for £7million this month, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted signing the 26-year-old would be a “massive coup”.

According to the Telegraph (6 January), Origi has been given a price tag of just £7million by Liverpool, with the Belgian a target for strugglers Newcastle.

The report claims the Magpies are also interested in Eddie Nketiah, Dominic Solanke, and Todd Cantwell.

Whelan insisted Origi could “make the difference” for Newcastle with the prospect of relegation looming large.

“That would be an absolute no brainer, for me,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“If he’s available for £7million then Newcastle have to be snapping Liverpool’s hand off.

“He’s a quality player, and one of these players who now needs to be playing 90 minutes every week – week-in, week-out.

“He can play anywhere across that front three, and that is versatility that Newcastle needs right now. Origi could make the difference for them.

“If they’re asking for only £7million then I’m surprised there aren’t more teams in for him. If they can pull it off, it’d be a massive coup for them.

“That will show intention in the market, bringing in a player of his calibre from a club like Liverpool.

It would also show that Origi is hungry to play football and that it doesn’t matter to him whether Newcastle are in a relegation fight or not.”

Newcastle are in need of a striker following an injury blow to top scorer Callum Wilson.

The England international is set to see a specialist this week to reveal the extent of his calf injury.
