Newcastle told to complete 'brilliant' Botman signing after 'promising' new development - pundit
Established Champions League stars Sven Botman and Diego Carlos would be “brilliant” signings for Newcastle, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the pair’s “experience and quality” could prove vital to preserving their Premier League status.
According to The Athletic (10 January), Newcastle would “love” to do a deal for Lille defender Botman, 22, in this window, with the player also keen on a move to England – but the French club are reluctant to let him leave.
The report also claims the Magpies are working on a deal for Sevilla’s Carlos.
Both centre-backs have featured in the Champions League for their respective clubs this term.
Whelan claimed it is “promising” to see Newcastle addressing their defensive woes by targeting “experience and quality” this month.

“Botman would be a brilliant signing,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“They could do with his experience and quality in that position, he’s obviously an established Champions League player along with Diego Carlos.
“It’s promising to see them looking in the right direction in this window because they can’t keep conceding goals if they want to stay in this division.
“Bringing two centre-halves in alongside Trippier – you can see that new defence starting to develop, and that’s exactly what they need.
“They have got goal scorers and a creative presence – but they need to be stronger defensively.”
Newcastle have already completed a deal for Kieran Trippier this month.
The Magpies have conceded the joint-most goals of any Premier League side this term (42).
