Newcastle are keeping close tabs on Burnley striker Andre Gray ahead of a possible summer swoop, according to a report.

The Chronicle claim the Championship leaders have already begun compiling a dossier on Gray and made extensive background checks.

It is said that Newcastle have already held "initial discussions in transfer meetings at the club" about how to reinforce a squad that is likely to be competing in the Premier League next season.

The Chronicle reports that the Magpies are prioritising the signing of a striker during the next transfer window as Rafael Benitez is keen to beef up his front line.

Newcastle recruitment chiefs are keen to find good value in the market and chase players who are keen to make the move to St James' Park.

They are said to be "definitely interested" in Gray, who will only have a year left on his Burnley contract at the end of the campaign and has not yet opened negotiations with the club about an extension.

Gray has demonstrated he is equipped to handle Premier League opponents after an encouraging debut campaign in the top flight.

The 25-year-old, who learned his trade in non-league football, has scored nine goals in 27 matches in all competitions, including eight goals in 23 Championship encounters.
