Finance guru: Newcastle United are being 'used by Big Six' amid latest from Premier League HQ

The so-called “big six” may be “using” Newcastle United to block unwanted legislation in Premier League votes.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ ambitions to join the Premier League’s financial elite.

Premier League TV companies in the UK have been lobbying for greater access to training grounds and for half-time interviews with managers for some time.

However, the Daily Mail reported earlier this month (19 June) that the top flight did not amass the two-thirds majority needed to push through the proposal.

It is understood that Newcastle, as well as Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest, sided with the big six to knock back the motion.

Plumley claims that the division’s biggest teams may have welcomed the Tynesiders into their voting alliance only because it is useful for them.

“Two things are plausible here,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“This is where the power dynamics come in. We know the big six have tried to lobby other clubs to vote in a way that benefits them in the past. We’ve see that happen.

“I think you can quite conceivably see how Newcastle fit into that. They have got the financial power now.

“The big six know they could break into that top six now. They won’t like that but they can use them to their advantage in terms of voting.

“If it’s a block of seven clubs, that’s now enough to block things. You have to get 14 votes to get something past.

You can see where it would play into their hands, while there would also be times when it didn’t.”
