Alan Hutton has urged Newcastle United to sign Anthony Gordon to compete at the top of the league.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender insisted Everton need to offload players to ease their financial problems.

Everton

The north-east giants have reignited their interest in the forward after loaning Chris Wood to Nottingham Forest.

Gordon was on Newcastle's radar in the summer and they had a £35m offer knocked back by the Merseyside club.

Everton sacked Frank Lampard on Monday (23 January) amid a disappointing run of form.

Hutton insisted the Toffees need to sell to bring in money for the new manager.

"I think he gives them [Newcastle] another option in the forward areas," he told Football Insider.

"I think if they really want to go and compete at the top of the league they can't stand still. They need to bring in players that are going to improve their squad and I think he definitely does that.

"I can't imagine the Everton fans being too happy in the situation that they are in to lose one of their top players.

"From an Everton point of view with the FFP situation, the probably need to sell to bring money in for whoever the new manager may be.

"It is not ideal if you are an Everton supporter but I do think he adds something to that Newcastle team moving forward."
