Newcastle United can take advantage of £39m domino effect in Ederson deal, he’d be perfect for Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle United might be able to beat Atletico Madrid to the signing of Atalanta’s Ederson this summer after all.

The 26-year-old Brazilian appeared set for a switch across to La Liga, with the Spanish giants closing in on his signature, despite a handful of games remaining of the 2025-26 campaign.

His contract is set to expire in the summer of 2027, and there doesn’t seem to be any chance of an extension with the Serie A club. There is still hope for the Magpies to complete a deal.

Newcastle’s transfer chiefs will be working in tandem with Eddie Howe this summer, especially given the current squad’s failures this term, and Ederson could be one of the first players through the door.

Joao Gomes deal opens the door for Newcastle to sign Ederson

Ederson’s move to Atletico looked all but confirmed for quite a few weeks, with the player rejecting the likes of Newcastle, Man United, Arsenal and Inter Milan for Diego Simeone’s side.

The reports have since gone cold, though, meaning the Magpies could still make a move ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. In fact, Atletico have made a move for another midfield star.

According to Ben Jacobs, they are closing in on a deal for Wolves’ Joao Gomes, reportedly worth £38.9million, and while there is still a verbal agreement with Ederson, Atalanta have not agreed.

Gomes’ impending move from the Premier League to La Liga could quite easily throw Ederson’s future into uncertainty, meaning that Bruno Guimaraes might have a new midfield partner next season.

Eddie Howe’s midfield could look much-changed next season

Of course, there is no guarantee that Guimaraes is a Newcastle player next season, but other exits seem much more likely at St James’ Park over the summer months.

The main rumours are surrounding Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa. Both strikers have disappointed in their first seasons with the Magpies, but the latter has been by far the most frustrating.

Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall could also leave. And Football Insider understands that Newcastle are planning for life without Sandro Tonali. The Magpies shouldn’t let more than one midfield star leave.

With that in mind, Ederson might be the perfect partner in crime for Guimaraes. While they haven’t played together on the international stage just yet, it could be a dangerous duo in the Premier League.
