Newcastle United could see their survival hopes boosted massively if they were to secure the signing of Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost.
The attacking giant, who stands at 6’5″, has been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Everton by ESPN, but it it Rafael Benitez, not Ronald Koeman, who needs his talents.
Since joining Sporting from German side Wolfsburg in the summer of 2016, Dost has scored a hugely impressive 41 goals in 53 appearances, scoring at a rate of nearly a goal-a-game in the Portuguese league.
Newcastle boss Benitez currently has three senior strikers – Dwight Gayle, Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic – at his disposal, but despite having all been handed over 25 games in the Premier League, none of the trio have been able to prove themselves in the top flight.
While Dutch international Dost would also represent an unknown quantity, he brings something to the table that would make him a crucial asset to Benitez.
With his height and power, the 28-year-old perfectly fits the role of a target man, something which Benitez is lacking but desperately needs to make his counter attacking football work.
While Mitrovic has tried to prove himself in a similar role, his hold up play is inadequate, while his aggressive nature makes him a liability.
Dost would be the ideal focal point for Newcastle’s attacks, with the likes of Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu offered a prime target for their crosses from the flanks.
Newcastle’s one aim this season will be to ensure that they retain their place in the Premier League, and although they have made a solid start, the quality of their strike force will be worrying both the fans and the manager.
As such, signing Dost would put an end to their doubts and give the entirety of Tyneside confidence that they will be playing top flight football next season.
Newcastle must blow Everton out of the water and sign Dost.
