Newcastle United cited in 'enormous' Everton claim after 'amazing' update - pundit

Alex McLeish has insisted £500million-plus would be an “amazing price” for Farhad Moshiri to sell Everton for as takeover talks reported.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, compared the prospective sale of the Toffees to the £300million sale of Newcastle United in October.

The Telegraph claim (13 June) a consortium fronted by Peter Kenyon are in the early stages of talks to buy the Merseyside outfit from Farhad Moshiri.

The current owner reportedly values the club at over £500million once the Toffees’ debt is taken into account.

McLeish insisted Kenyon and his associates would want to drive Everton back into the top ten of the Premier League.

However, he admitted the £500million-plus price tag is staggering compared to what was spent on Newcastle eight months ago.

Discussing a possible takeover at Everton, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s interesting. Obviously there’s a big stadium shift, isn’t there, onto the Mersey.

“It’s a really amazing price when you think of the Newcastle takeover. They’re an enormous club.

“I don’t know the ins and outs of these situations. I’m sure whoever takes over is going to make sure they’re competing in the top half of the table.”

Moshiri has been a shareholder at Goodison Park since buying a 49.9 per cent stake back in 2019.

He increased his shares in the club to 94 per cent back in January this year.

The former Arsenal chief has reportedly invested over £500million into the Toffees to date.

Bill Kenwright own 1.3 per cent of the club, while other shareholders make up 4.6 per cent.
