Kieran Maguire: Newcastle could be catapulted into 'big seven' after big Ashley development
Mike Ashley’s latest lawsuit could help push through a Newcastle United takeover and catapult the club into the “big seven.”
That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after Ashley filed against the Premier League for breaching competition laws.
He alleges that in blocking a Saudi PIF-backed Newcastle takeover last summer, the Premier League broke free-market regulations.
Ashley is seeking damages for loss of profit and wants the Premier League to reverse its decision regarding the takeover.
The party line for the Premier League is that it did not block the deal and instead offered arbitration on who would run the club in the event of a Saudi takeover.
Maguire claims that, if successful, this latest lawsuit could lead to Newcastle entering the top-flight elite as part of a “big seven.”

“This is a proxy war for the takeover, without a doubt,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“Remember, the biggest beneficiary from this will probably be Mike Ashley. He is the person trying to sell the club.
“He does feel, rightly or wrongly, that there are other clubs who fear that a wealthily-backed Newcastle could turn the big six into the big seven.
“That’s why he thinks they are opposed to the takeover.”
HMRC’s investigations into Newcastle’s tax affairs was discontinued earlier in the week.
Ashley later claimed that “dark forces” were preventing a takeover on Tyneside.
