Finance guru: Newcastle United could now sign record-smashing £20m-a-year deal

Newcastle United could sign a £20million-a-year shirt sponsor deal and almost double the previous record for a club outside the so-called big six.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ negotiating position as they seek a new principal partner.

Newcastle’s deal with online bookmaker Fun88 first signed in 2017 was due to run until the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

But as per iNews last Wednesday (8 June), the Tynesiders have now begun the hunt for a new shirt sponsor after they cut the Fun88 deal short.

Commercial revenue will be pivotal if Newcastle are to bridge the revenue gap between themselves and the Premier League’s elite, thereby matching their power in the transfer market.

And Plumley forecasts that they could take a major leap towards their rivals with a new shirt sponsor deal.

“I think Newcastle will be looking for slightly higher than Everton’s which has been reported as around £10m to £12m,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“West Ham’s is around £10m and that was the biggest outside the top six. The top six are then from £30m to around £45m.

“If you’re Newcastle, you’re looking to close that gap. Whether they get close to £30m in the short to medium term is difficult to say.

“But anything around £20m would be a really strong start. The Fun88 deal was worth about £6.5m, so that’s a big jump.”

Newcastle’s commercial income for 2020-21, the last financial year on record, totalled £18m.

For comparison, the league’s top commercial generators, Man United, generated £232m in the same timeframe.
