Announcement soon: Newcastle finalise Emenalo deal after breakthrough today - Sources

Newcastle United are finalising contract details with Michael Emenalo as they close in on appointing him their director of football, Football Insider understands.

This site revealed on 9 November that United were in talks with the former Nigeria international after het met the new owners in Saudi Arabia.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that negotiations are progressing well with Emenalo, 56, and they are now confident they have tied up a deal.

It is expected that Emenalo’s agreement will be of a similar length to that of new manager Eddie Howe.

The north-east giants announced last week that Howe has signed a contract running until the summer of 2024.

Emenalo and Howe are set to work closely together on overhauling a Newcastle squad that has struggled in this season’s Premier League.

Emenalo has an impressive CV that includes 10 trophy-laden years at Chelsea, the last six of which were spent as the club’s technical director overseeing recruitment and manager hires.

He had a less successful two-year period at Monaco that ended in August 2019.

Emenalo is now set to make his return to football at what promises to be an exciting period at Newcastle.

As first revealed by Football Insider, ex-Liverpool and Rangers man Frank McParland will also be part of the recruitment team at United.

The club are preparing for a major recruitment drive in January as they look to avoid relegation, with two centre-backs and a central midfielder top of their shopping list.

Newcastle are winless from 11 Premier League matches this season and are five points adrift of safety with 27 games still to play.
