Newcastle United have one of the best in the business fighting their corner in their upcoming legal battle with the Premier League.
That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after Mike Ashley appointed Daniel Jowell as his QC for the recently filed anti-competition lawsuit against the Premier League.
Jowell is an anti-competition specialist and, as per his Brick Court Chambers website, has previously represented Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.
Jowell is tasked with removing some of the hurdles that stand in the way of a Newcastle takeover by the Saudia Arabia Public Investment Fund.
And Maguire claims that his appointment to the legal team can only be good news towards that end.
“It bodes well for the takeover,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“People’s reputations and the future of Newcastle United are at stake. You want somebody in your corner who is going to represent your interests as best as possible.
“So you find out who the best QCs are and you snap them up. There are some pretty impressive ones out there and by all accounts, he falls into that category.
“So what Ashley has done is definitely logical in terms of this appointment.”
Shortly before Ashley filed against the Premier League, HMRC dropped a long-running investigation into Newcastle’s tax affairs.
HMRC also dropped proceedings against West Ham as the task force codenamed Operation Loom scaled back its investigations.
