Kieran Maguire: Big clubs 'petrified' of Newcastle as new allegations emerge
The Premier League’s “big clubs” are “petrified” of the threat a post-takeover Newcastle United would pose to the established order.
So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about explosive allegations at the Competition Appeals Tribunal.
As quoted by BBC Sport on 29 September, Daniel Jowell QC alleged that Premier League clubs had lobbied against the PCP Captial takeover deal.
The Qatari broadcaster BeIn Sports is also reported to have worked to prevent the Saudi Public Investment Fund from buying Newcastle.
Maguire claims it is no surprise to see the division’s top clubs keen to block any deal which might see the Magpies take a seat at the top table.
“They are petrified,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“The other big clubs all want to get into the Champions League, and six into four doesn’t go. Seven into four is even harder.
“The moral and ethical route they are trying to go down doesn’t hold any water when you look at the backgrounds of the existing owners.
“We have got oligarchs, sovereign wealth funds, companies registered in the Camen Islands. So this is a form of protectionism.
“There is no doubt that these clubs have lobbied the Premier League in order to prevaricate the deal.
“They either want to delay the takeover or make it so awkward that PIF just walks away from the table. That’s ideally what they want.”
