Newcastle United have their own Phil Foden in the ranks after deal agreed - pundit

Elliot Anderson could be Newcastle United’s Phil Foden after committing his future to the club.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Anderson’s new deal.

The 19-year-old signed a new “long-term” Newcastle United contract on Wednesday (21 September) after making two cameo appearances in the Premier League this season.

Foden, 22, has been a revelation since breaking into the Man City team, scoring 48 goals in 179 appearances.

McLeish claims that Newcastle are expecting big things from Anderson.

“This is the future of football,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“You get young guys coming through the ranks such as these but they are few and far between. City have Phil Foden, it’s not as if they have a conveyor belt where every kid is going to be a Man City player.

“Chelsea have a good rota of loaning out young players to European teams then selling them if they weren’t quite at the required level.

“They made good money. It’s a good model to have. But it is nice to see a young lad come through the Newcastle system.

“You relate to them more if they have come through your club and they are fans of the club. Elliot seems to be that so they will be hoping he can be a big player for them.”

Anderson joined Bristol Rovers on loan in January and went on to score eight goals and register five assists in 21 appearances.

He also scored the all-important seventh goal in a 7-0 win over Scunthorpe on 7 May, sealing the Gas’ promotion to League One.
