Paul Robinson has heaped praise on new Newcastle United signing Nick Pope.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Burnley teammate of Pope detailed why Eddie Howe's side will go "onto the next level" with their new goalkeeper.

On Thursday (23 June), the Magpies announced the signing of Pope from Burnley on a four-year contract.

It is widely reported that the deal for the 30-year-old will cost Newcastle just £10million.

Robinson highlighted Pope's agility and distribution in a glowing reference of his former colleague.

"He has an outstanding work ethic," he told Football Insider. "He constantly wants to improve himself.

"The time I spent with him at Burnley, I cannot remember him missing any training.

"His reactions are excellent. He makes unorthodox saves. He is a tall, big lad and people think that could be awkward but he finds a way.

"Over the years he has developed his own technique and has learned how to be a goalkeeper in his own body, if that makes sense.

"There has been criticism levelled at him over his feet but he works really hard on that. I think he still needs to work on his left foot but his distribution has improved no end. His long kicking is as good as anyone in the Premier League.

"He is very commanding of his box as well. He is such a big character. He is loud and vocal.

"What I like about him is, if he misjudges a cross and gets it wrong it does not put him off. He will come out and take the next one.

"Newcastle fans will see him make saves that are out of this world. He is so big and agile. He will take Newcastle onto the next level."
