Newcastle Exclusive: Bruce in pre-Jan transfer mission for 26-yr-old colossus
Newcastle United are keeping close tabs on giant Crewe Alexandra striker Mikael Mandron ahead of the January window, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
United manager Steve Bruce was at The Alexandra Stadium on Saturday to watch the 26-year-old Frenchman deliver a vintage target man performance in his side’s 2-0 win over Peterborough United.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that a flock of scouts and managers were at the clash against table-topping Peterborough.
Mandron, who has scored six goals already this season in all competitions, was instrumental in his side’s 2-0 outstanding victory against the league leaders.
The 6ft 3in striker joined Crewe on a one-year contract in the summer after becoming a free agent following his exit from Gillingham.
He attracted interest from a host of clubs including Championship trio Barnsley, Swansea City and Huddersfield before his move to the League One side.

The front man is eligible to play for Scotland through his father and is attracted by the possibility of forcing his way into Steve Clark’s thinking.
He scored six goals in 28 appearances in 2019-20 and had been on fire prior to the March lockdown that ended the season prematurely.
Mandron has had spells at a number of Football League clubs, playing for Colchester United, Gillingham, Fleetwood Town, Eastleigh, Shrewsbury Town and Wigan Athletic in addition to Sunderland and Gillingham.
In the current season, he has scored six goals in 14 appearances in all competitions and started all of Crewe’s league matches.
