Kenny: These four players are the real reason for Newcastle fighting relegation

Newcastle United have an “underrated” squad and would not be fighting relegation if their four best players had stayed fit.

That is according to ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Burnley on Sunday.

Summer signing and top scorer Callum Wilson made his first appearance since February at Turf Moor after recovering from a hamstring setback.

Allan Saint-Maximin meanwhile notched a goal and assist on his second appearances since recovering from a month-long groin problem.

Ryan Fraser has missed several matches throughout the campaign with injury while Miguel Almiron faced a spell on the sidelines between February and March.

Kenny pointed out that Newcastle have a formidable attack when not afflicted by injuries and that fitness issues are behind the club’s current league position.

“They’ve got an underrated squad,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Keeping them all fit, that’s the problem. If you’re without your key players, you’re gonna struggle.

“But Fraser, Saint-Maximin, Wilson, Almiron, they’re all quality players who shouldn’t really be in this position.

“If they’d all stayed fit maybe they wouldn’t be.”

A run of just one loss in their last six matches means Newcastle have a six-point cushion on Fulham in 18th with a game in hand.

The Magpies now face a tough five-game run with clashes against West Ham, Liverpool, Arsenal, Leicester City and Man City.

In other news, top pundit claims Newcastle United fans may soon “owe Steve Bruce an apology” after latest development.
