Sources: Significant update on Newcastle signing Dele Alli after two sources update today

Newcastle United are not pursuing a move for Tottenham star Dele Alli in the upcoming transfer window, Football Insider has been told.

Spurs have given the green light to Alli, 25, moving on next month after his bit-part role in recent seasons.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that manager Eddie Howe has rejected the chance to push for Alli as he is concentrating on strengthening other areas of the squad.

The Saudi-owned club have been linked with the England international as they look to boost their survival hopes with a January signing spree.

Football Insider understands from a Spurs source today that Alli is available for a loan or permanent move despite his impressive display in the recent 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

That led to suggestions manager Antonio Conte had pulled the plug on a potential exit next month.

But that is not the case and Tottenham are willing to negotiate a deal, with a loan believed to be the most likely option.

Barring a change of heart from Howe, Newcastle are not in the race with the many other interested Premier League clubs.

The Magpies’ priorities in January are to strengthen in defence and central midfield, with Howe keen to bolster the spine of his team.

Alli is regarded more as an attacking midfielder, with his main asset his late runs into the box and ability to create and score goals.

His career has stagnated in recent years and he is far from a regular in Conte’s team.

Alli has seven Premier League starts among 16 appearances in all competitions this term.

But he has made only one start in the Premier League since being hauled off at half-time of the humiliating 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on 26 September.
