Newcastle United news: Howe has landed his own Declan Rice after 'brilliant' signing confirmed - pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Newcastle have landed their very own Declan Rice with the “brilliant” capture of Bruno Guimaraes.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, also claimed the 24-year-old Brazillian is in the same mould as Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and the Whites’ Kalvin Phillips.
Newcastle confirmed the signing of Lyon midfielder Guimaraes on Sunday (30 January) after fending off reported interest from Arsenal.
The three-time Brazil international and Olympic gold medallist joins the St James’ Park club for a reported initial fee of £33.3million.
Guimaraes registered three goals and eight assists during his two-year stint at Lyon.
Whelan suggested the Magpies have made a “very clever” move by swooping for a “top-level” midfielder.
“It’s a very important, brilliant signing – first and foremost for their midfield,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury
“They needed someone who can control the game and the tempo, and I think he’s going to bring that to Newcastle.
“You could see that in their game against Leeds. They were lacking in that midfield area.
“He will bring some real quality and top-level experience to the side. He can start attacks off, very much like an N’Golo Kante at Chelsea, Kalvin Phillips at Leeds, or Declan Rice at West Ham.
“It was a very clever move. They’ve got that marquee signing that the fans were holding out for, and they’ve built around him as well.
“He could be a really great success and a fan favourite at St James’ Park.”
Newcastle followed the midfielder’s signing with the deadline day arrivals of Matt Targett and Dan Burn.
Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood also joined the newly-rich Magpies earlier in the window.
