Newcastle United news: Pundit shares 'massive' Callum Wilson claim - 'huge deal'

Newcastle United may prove to be the true beneficiaries if Callum Wilson is selected to go to the World Cup with England.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the striker’s recent form.

Wilson, 30, starred for the Magpies in a 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday (29 October), scoring a brace in front of Gareth Southgate.

According to The Athletic (1 November), Wilson is on Southgate’s 55-man longlist for the forthcoming World Cup.

McManus claims Newcastle will ultimately benefit the most if the striker ends up going to Qatar.

“He should absolutely go to Qatar,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“He is in fantastic form and he must have convinced Southgate with that performance against Villa. As a striker, what more can you do to convince a manager?

“I think Newcastle will want him to go. There is the risk he gets an injury and misses some of the second half of the season but Newcastle have other options. Isak is still coming back.

“The club will be supporting Callum, I’m sure of that. Just think what it would do for his confidence if he went to the World Cup and scored.

“It would be massive. If he goes, it’s not the end of the world for Newcastle. It would be a huge deal for the club on and off the pitch.”

Wilson has four England caps to his name and made his international debut in November 2018.

Newcastle are next in action against Southampton on Sunday (6 November).
