Newcastle United player ratings vs Bournemouth – Will Osula impresses, Anthony Elanga shocking

Newcastle United were beaten 2-1 by Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday to compound Eddie Howe’s misery as doubts linger around his future in charge.

Newcastle struggled to get a foothold on the ball in the early stages, and they were behind shortly after the half-hour mark as Marcus Tavernier tapped home a low cross from Rayan.

Djordje Petrovic kept the Cherries ahead before the interval as he produced a fine save to stop Alex Scott’s clearance ending up in his own net.

Will Osula then grabbed an equaliser in the 68th minute as VAR overruled an initial offside call due to Evanilson inadvertently playing the Magpies striker through on goal.

Bournemouth did go on to win it in the 85th minute as Adrien Truffert scored his first Premier League goal, and Football Insider have rated how each Newcastle player performed during the clash.

Will Osula – Man of the match

Osula was a shining light on a dismal afternoon for the majority of Howe’s players.

The burly Dane was a handful for the Cherries’ centre-backs throughout, so even though not everything he did came off, he should be applauded for his efforts.

Osula’s stats vs Bournemouth

The one moment of real quality from a Magpies star came as he set himself and fired past Petrovic to level in the second half.

He has been trusted by Howe ahead of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa in recent weeks, and his decision looks to be paying off despite Newcastle’s struggles as a team.

Anthony Elanga was completely ineffective on the right flank

Elanga has consistently let himself down this season after arriving to real fanfare last summer following a strong season at Nottingham Forest.

The Swedish international continued his poor league form with another shoddy showing against Bournemouth, as he failed to create a chance of take a shot on target.

He was shut out throughout the game by the impressive Truffert, with Howe seeing fit to haul him off just after the hour mark.

Sources have told Football Insider that Howe has a 50/50 chance of being sacked before the end of the season, and it does seem as if Elanga is content to see his manager leave with performances like the one he put in on Saturday.
