Newcastle United sent Jesse Lingard warning after BBC update - expert

Newcastle United should not sign Jesse Lingard this summer after his failure to make a mark at Man United this season.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 29-year-old.

BBC Sport reported on 4 May that Newcastle, Juventus and AC Milan are all interested in signing the 29-year-old on a free transfer when his Man United contract expires this summer.

Lingard has only started two Premier League games this season after failing to move away from Old Trafford in the summer of 2021 and in January.

The out of favour ace is out of contract this summer and is expected to leave Old Trafford.

McAvennie claims Lingard would only be joining Newcastle for the money.

“He’s a talent but if he’s going to Newcastle he’s going for the money,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s just sat about this season. I don’t get it. He had the chance to go last summer? Why didn’t he take it?

“He’s lost his England place. The way he has handled himself doesn’t sit right with me.

“If I didn’t play I was devastated. Lingard doesn’t seem bothered at all.

“I’m afraid I don’t think this would be a good move. He had the chance to leave Man United and decided he would stay there.

“He’s just stayed on the bench, I can’t get that round my head. He was never going to get a game at Man United.”

As revealed by Football Insider, the Red Devils rejected a £5million loan bid for Lingard from Newcastle in January.

Eddie Howe’s side are next in action against Arsenal on (16 May).
