Newcastle United have received an enquiry for Dwight Gayle from Stoke City, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim that the newly-relegated Championship club have targeted Gayle as a player that would help guide them back to the Premier League.
The report reveals that Newcastle have made it clear it would take a sizeable fee in order to tempt him away from St. James Park, and the player himself will not push for a move away.
It is understood that Benitez is not actively looking to sell the 27-year-old, but he is keeping an open mind depending on the size of the bid.
Football Insider verdict:
In the 2016/17 season, Dwight Gayle was in outstanding form for Newcastle United in the Championship, leading the club almost single-handedly back to the Premier League. That season he scored 23 goals in 32 league appearances and looked like a top-quality striker who would be able to thrive in the top-tier. However, the 27-year-old struggled for goals last season, scoring just six times in 35 Premier League appearances as the Toon finished in an impressive 10th position in the league table. Whether this was due to Rafael Benitez’s cautious and defensive style of play, or if Gayle simply found his level in the second-tier, it’s hard to say either way. He deserves another season of regular first-team football to show that he can score a good amount of goals at this level. However, if the club receives an interesting offer, Mike Ashley may be tempted to sell and bring someone else in.
In other Newcastle United news, the club have made a bid for a Juventus and Italian international midfielder.
