Newcastle United tipped to sign key Matt Targett ally as fee agreed - pundit

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Newcastle United to sign Matt Targett and another left-back this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed up to nine players could leave Newcastle this summer in a major overhaul of the squad.

Targett, 26, moved to St. James’ Park on loan from Villa in January and has established himself as Eddie Howe’s first-choice left-back.

The Northern Echo reported earlier this week (17 May) that Newcastle have the option to convert his loan into a permanent deal for a fee of around £15million.

Aston Villa replaced him with Lucas Digne in January, and as quoted by Birmingham World earlier this week (18 May), Steven Gerrard claimed it was up to the Magpies to decide but he would welcome him back to Villa Park.

“I think Matt Targett would be a great signing for Newcastle but I think they will bring in another left-back,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They will want to have two left-backs.

“There will be a lot of outs too. [Jonjo] Shelvey will be gone, [Matt] Ritchie will be gone, [Ryan] Fraser will be gone and F[ederico] Fernandez will be gone.

“There will be eight or nine players that go because he will want to get rid of all the dead wood.

“They will bring in the right players.”

Targett has played 15 times while on loan at Newcastle but is yet to register a goal contribution.

He will have three years left to run on his Villa contract if he returns to the Midlands this summer.
