Newcastle United to bid for Premier League star imminently after Hugo Ekitike update - pundit

Newcastle United are will sign a top striker after pulling the plug on talks with Hugo Ekitike.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies; efforts to sign a new striker.

On Thursday, June 23, 90min reported Newcastle have pulled out of the deal to sign Ekitike, 19.

The Magpies have been trying to sign the striker since January though it is now claimed they are frustrated with a lack of progress in recent weeks.

Kenny now claims Newcastle could start bidding for a different target immediately.

“We have been talking about this for weeks and nothing has happened,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I think Eddie Howe wants players in for the start of pre-season and it doesn’t look like Ekitike is going to be arriving anytime soon.

“They should move on. There are other players out there. I wonder if they can go out and sign a more proven striker at this level.

“Signing a good attacking talent is a good move but I think, in the short term, a top-class Premier League experienced player would be a better way to go.

“They want players in as soon as possible so I wouldn’t be surprised to see bids going in over the next few days.”

Ekitike scored 10 goals in 24 games during the 2021-22 Ligue 1 campaign.

Newcastle’s top scorer in 2021-22 was Callum Wilson, who scored eight.
