Newcastle United to pay 'over the odds' for Sven Botman after source's update - pundit

Newcastle United will overpay to sign Sven Botman from Lille this summer.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ prolonged pursuit of the defender.

The Telegraph reported on 13 June that Newcastle were willing to walk away from a deal for Botman, 22, after Lille upped their asking price from £30million to £36million.

A Magpies source told Football Insider on Thursday (16 June) that they have not given up hope of landing the centre-back – but he would prefer a move to transfer rivals AC Milan.

Both sides are understood to have agreed personal terms with the Netherlands Under-21 international but there has been no breakthrough regarding a fee for his services.

McAvennie claims it is inevitable that Newcastle will end up paying inflated fees for players like Botman.

“We knew this would happen,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“This is what happens when everyone knows you have this much money.

“It’s just something they have to live with. If they want to walk away and prove a point, then fine.

“But Newcastle, at some point, are going to have to pay the money for these players.

“Whether it’s Botman or someone else, they will pay over the odds. If they don’t then they won’t sign anyone.”

Botman made 32 appearances for Lille in all competitions during the 2021-22 season.

He also struggled with injuries to his groin and hamstring, causing him to miss 14 games across the campaign.
