Kieran Maguire: Newcastle United to unlock PIF riches as 'more lucrative deals' imminent

Newcastle United will be able to justify more lucrative commercial deals in the eyes of the Premier League’s Fair Market Value committee if they win the League Cup.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Eddie Howe’s side confirmed their place in the final at Wembley on 26 February.

The Magpies beat Nottingham 3-1 over two legs in the semi-final to put them within one match of a first trophy since 1969.

It represents a remarkable transformation since the takeover of the Saudi Public Investment Fund a little over a year ago, but the owners have even loftier long-term ambitions.

But to unlock their near-limitless wealth under the terms of financial fair play, they must first boost their income, which has led the club to place great emphasis on finding new commercial partners.

Sources told Football Insider on Thursday (2 January) that the Magpies are unhappy with their deal with technical supplier Castore and could choose to buy back their rights from the UK company.

Any new deal, however, would need to be ratified by the Premier League’s Fair Market Value panel, which ensures that clubs are not able to artificially inflate their income via backdoor sponsorship payments.

Maguire claims that a League Cup triumph would greatly improve Newcastle‘s negotiating position in the commercial department.

The Fair Market Value panel is going to look at viewership when it comes to assessing commercial deals signed by the likes of Newcastle,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

Therefore, if Newcastle can point to being in Europe, they will be able to say that they are not only playing more matches but more matches in more geographic markets.

This can only assist them in terms of signing more deals at more lucrative values.

It would therefore be fantastic news for Newcastle if they were to win the League Cup. That would guarantee them participation in Europe.

“But remember, they could also get into Europe by finishing in the top four, and it would be even better for them if they were playing in the Champions League.
